Masquage

We wanted to represent something extremely current, and the war turned out to be an interesting and full-fledged topic. Not so much for its primary meaning, but for that relative to the individual. Nowadays it is increasingly difficult to find someone who stands out in a mass where everyone resembles everyone. All with the same clothes, ways of doing, the same opinions. A world in which the personality of the individual is flattened by a conformism dictated by the society in which we live. Where expressing oneself means to take a big risk. Where “mainstream” is the keyword. And the bad thing is that society is formed by the same people who complain about the phenomenon, but that ultimately dictate these silly rules We want to represent what for us today means feeling like a fish out of water and not being able to return to the sea.

mask + cage

After a series of sketches that did not best represent the idea we had in mind, we found “our man”. Our mask is in itself a collection of references and meanings. The cage structure refers to feeling prisoners of a place that is not considered as ours. The sharp mirrors refer to the mask that everyone wears every day. We defined it as a mask that reflects and therefore represents how society wants us to be. Every once in a while this mask falls, and it shatters. We find ourselves alone and lost, and most of the time uncomfortable showing who we really are, afraid of being teased or not accepted. What remains is the shards of the mask that we used to protect ourselves before, hiding behind a face that is not ours. Now those sharp shards serve to protect us differently, stinging anyone who tries to hurt or harm us. Pushing people away at the first sight.

The eyes are covered with various textures of dark material, to make us understand how the system in which we live makes us see a distorted reality. The mouth is stitched, symbol of how people find themselves prevented in saying what they actually think. What comes out is a modified or false version of what one would actually say. The ears are covered with soundproofing material, which explains how the system we live in makes us hear only what is convenient and not the facts as they really are. The shape is reminiscent of a motorcycle helmet, to highlight the feeling of “protection” that we feel while wearing a mask. No one will see us for what we really are. Being the alienation from society a phenomenon also present in the past, the lengthening of the part covering the ears refers to some ancient Roman helmets.

Thinking about the war between society and the individual, we could not help but think about how people wear a mask every day or to protect themselves, or to hide themselves, or to finally camouflage themselves within a system in which they are not very comfortable. thinking this we found many similarities between the real war and the concepts we wanted to inckude in our project. From here, we did a research to find the best way to better interpret our thinking.
